About Philip
Philip Fields is an ethical hacker, terrorism expert, and technical thought leader with two decades of national security experience.
As a Senior Intelligence Analyst at the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 13 years, Philip led multi-national offensive cyber operations, disrupting hundreds of threats around the world. Philip played a key role in shaping Western counterterrorism strategies and frequently presented at international conferences, fostering close collaboration with law enforcement, security, and intelligence agencies across the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
As an adjunct faculty member at the Bureau, Philip taught courses on international terrorism, open-source intelligence, and social media. In his role as product owner for multiple enterprise technologies, he introduced advanced analytic capabilities to the workforce and advocated for responsible use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in government. He also served as the FBI's lead intelligence liaison officer, coordinating cyber-enabled counterterrorism efforts abroad.
Philip began his national security career in 2005 as an Antitank Assault Guided Missileman (0352) in the United States Marine Corps. He completed two combat deployments to Fallujah, Iraq, initially serving as a TOW gunner in counter-IED operations during Iraq's first democratic elections and later leading scouting and reconnaissance patrols during the Sunni Awakening and the US surge. Rising to the rank of Sergeant, he later completed a temporary assignment with the Provost Marshal's Office before finishing his military service as Headquarters Platoon Sergeant with 1st Tank Battalion.
After his time in the Marine Corps, Philip earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in International Security and Conflict Resolution from San Diego State University. His studies focused on Environment and Security and included coursework in Arabic language and culture. He observed the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda while studying abroad at the Arusha Peace Institute in Tanzania and completed a food justice internship with Aztec Farms in the Tijuana River Valley.
More recently, Philip completed a Graduate Certificate with honors in Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking through the SANS Technology Institute. He obtained additional certifications including GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH), GIAC Penetration Tester (GPEN), GIAC Mobile Device Security Analyst (GMOB), and GIAC Assessing and Auditing Wireless Networks (GAWN), and is a member of the GIAC Advisory Board.
Philip is currently seeking opportunities to share his unique perspective and experiences in national security, while imposing real-world cost and risk on cyber adversaries. A staunch privacy advocate, he also enjoys teaching operational security and technical tradecraft to high-risk research communities.
